Weeks 17 & 18: February 13th, 15th, 20th &22nd- Mid-year tests


Tests are taking place during these two weeks.
Grammar, vocabulary, reading and listening tests were on Feb. 13th, Writing was on Feb.15th and Feb. 20th and 22nd are devoted to oral tests.

Week 16: February 6th & 8th- The Ice Hotel

- We reviewed about our favourite type of accommodation.
- We saw a video on an Ice Hotel in Sweden and did a listening exercise.
- We practised the preparation and delivery of a presentation on a trip we had done.
- We practised modifiers and their intonation.
- We saw how to show surprise and transmit an opinion by using negative questions.
- We talked about the emails by Ben and some vocabulary related to them.
- We did a listening exercise on acculturation, page 57.
- We also heard about accomodation problems and practise the structure Have/get something done.

Homework:
- Revise for next week (workbook very useful, for instance)
- Do review page 59.
During week 18 (February 20th & 22nd) try to do the following:
- Exercise 13 page 55
- Readings pages 65 and 187
- Exercise 1 page 62
- Have a look at Jeffrey Hill's blog to see what's up in the international political scene.
- Read whatever you prefer on NASA's website on Climate change and Global warming to warm up on the very first day after the exam break.

Week 15: January 30th & February 1st- Accommodation

- We talked about what we remembered on the books we had read.
- We did Time Out from unit 5 with vocabulary on sports and free time activities.
- We did the Community Centre speaking activity (worker and difficult person)
- We revised Time Out vocabulary and started unit 6 Accommodation.
- We practised Modifiers.
- We revised modal verbs in the past with the cards of incredible news.
Homework:
- We saw pages 152-153 and we are going to write a letter of complaint.
- Exercise 2 of modifiers page 173
- Exercise 8 page 53
- Reading the e-mails of pages 56 and 57 and page 185

Week 14: January 23rd & 25th- Arriving to mid-course!

- We revised The Big Bang Theory vocabulary in context (coming, toe touch, bear claw, we'll never know, Thank you, they're my mother's, pedometer, stretch)
- We did You should't have been there from the book, pages 46 and 47, except from exercises 1 to 5.
- We revised present perfect continuous with a speaking exercise with a game of cards.
- We did a couple of exercises (speaking and writing) on the books in English we had recently read: Cards in the book and What's the story?
- We got feedback on the writings of the annecdote and Serial Taxi.
- We did a course evaluation questionnaire.

Homework:
- Exercise 2 page 171, ex.9 page 46.
- Exercises 2,3 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9 pages 152 and 153 in preparation for the next writing task.
- If you read a book in English and you haven't done any writing on it but are willing to, you can do this: Write about 150 words on the end of the book you've read. Explain what the end was, what you thought of it and how you would have changed it in any way and why.

Week 13: January 16th & 18th- Starting unit 5 Sports and Interests

The Big Bang Theory
- We did Make a Difference, from unit 4.
- We revised the reading and we saw how to compare using the structure The... the.
- We were given and corrected together the vocabulary, reading and grammar test from December, together with the Serial Taxi writing. Find here the KEY to the test.
- We practised the structure with a photocopy with beginnings of examples of it.
- We started unit 5, on Sports and Interests, A Bit Extreme. We saw a little bit of vocabulary on extreme sports, we did a listening on a peculiar uncle and saw vocabulary about injuries and accidents.
- We revised using present perfect simple and continuous.
- We worked with a scene of The Big Bang Theory in which Sheldon is trying to do some jogging with Penny. Here is the transcript if you want to check it all.

Homework:
Do Review 2 on page 41 and exercise 7 on page 46.

Week 12: January 9th & 11th- New Year Resolutions

- We warmed up with our photos from the Christmas break.
- We saw the first nine minutes of the film Bridget Jones's Diary and we completed a table about the six main characters.
- We shared out views and saw it again while checking the script. We checked the vocabulary.
- We did Gabrielle's Out of Reach song from the original soundtrack of the film.
- We revised the vocabulary from the trascript.
- We did Big Issues on pages 36 and 37. We got familiar with social issues and saw fixed phrases to comment on them.
- We exchanged the good news stories we had researched during the break.

Homework:
- Find a positive item of news.
- Write a new year resolution for the class poster.
- Write on the Good News virtual wall.
